The Freedom Fighters Memorial in Chikmagalur, is a contemplative civic space that honors India’s independence movement through stone, silence, and restraint. Using rough stone, symbolic steps, and etched narratives, the memorial invites visitors to physically and emotionally engage with memory, sacrifice, and collective history.

The design approach was guided by restraint. Rough stone was chosen to echo the endurance and hardships of the freedom struggle, grounding the memorial in permanence. Jaisalmer stone introduced warmth and clarity, providing a legible and durable surface for etched names and portraits. Each panel was conceived as a vertical element, with two portraits placed side by side, reading as a series of standing figures that surround the visitor and suggest collective strength. Positioned at the centre, the visitor stands amidst this assembly, reflecting how individuals once stood together to shape the freedom we have today.
Text is not treated as signage but embedded into walls and planes, making information part of the built form. Meaning emerges through material, scale, and progression rather than instruction.
